 1.) The non medical use of the stimulant adderall has increased among white college students attending a four year university.

2.) The audience is those who are interested in the illegal distribution of adderall, and the most recent statistics about the nonmedial use of adderall.

3.) The goal of this article is to inform the public about the illegal use of prescription adderall and the increased consumption of the drug for nonmedical use, especially to help college students study. The article also discusses the negative effects that adderall has on individuals who do not have ADD and how it is an unfair advantage for students who study without the stimulant.

4.) Logos: This article is a scientific study based on randomly selected college students who reported their use of the drug adderall. This study also testing the negative side effects of the drug. All of the evidence proved statistically significant. Any study with hard facts and sound evidence appeals to the logical mind because it cannot be argued against.

Ethos: Throughout the article doctors give their testimony about their findings. When an article is supported by someone with  PhD it adds to the credibility to the information provided, and more people are likely to trust the article's conclusion.

Sufficient: This article provides enough information and evidence to make a valid point and have its readers believe in the results. The article provides information of the different kinds of statistical and scientific studies conducted, but did not get into extreme detail of all the different mechanisms of the study. This is just the right amount of information for the reader because they are able to have a more solid understanding of where the evidence came from but are not lost in incomprehensible scientific terms.

Relevant: This article has importance to this generation because as years pass more and more students are abusing prescription adderall. It is important for the public as well as the Food and Drug Administration to know about the negative side effects and unfair advantages adderall has on the student population. It is also important for the public to know how much this drug is being used illegally, and this article gives statistics of the high numbers of non medical adderall abusers.

5.) This article and pertaining studies does a solid job of informing the public of the abuse of nonprescription adderall and its negative side effects and unfair advantages. Anyone reading this article would be convinced that adderall truly is being abused and that it is highly dangerous.

Speech

Of Things that Matter Most

1.) Focusing on the simple fundamental importances in life will increase one's joys.

2.) The audience are LDS members of this day, and all those listening to general conference.

3.) The goal of this article is to convince LDS members that they need to slow down and take time to learn the fundamentals in life, rather then get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the modern day and their busy lives. President Uchtdorf wants to convince Latter Day Saints that in order to become the best they can be and have ultimate happiness they need to first master basic principles and doctrine.

4.) Logos: President Uchtdorf uses a lot of logical reasoning as to why people need to slow down in order to succeed. The first example he uses is the nature of how a tree grows. He explains that when there are optimal conditions for growth the tree matures faster, but when conditions have declined that tree will only focus on sustaining life rather then growth. This relates to his topic because in the face of modern adversity if we don't turn our attention to the fundamental principle and commandments of the gospel we would perish, just as the tree would if it didn't turn its attention to the simple matter of sustaining life. Another example he uses is that of an airplane when confronted with turbulence. He explains that younger pilots would think it best to speed up in order to more quickly escape the turbulence, when in theory it is better to slow the airplane down in order to mask the negative conditions. This logically supports his claim that people need to slow down rather then speed up in their lives to find happiness.

Ethos: The fact that this talk is being given by one of them members of the first presidency proves that the content is credible, but President Uchtdorf uses other respectable sources to support his claim. He quotes the scriptures, which to his specific audience is a solid recognized resource that is firmly agreed upon. He also uses the words of past and current prophets and church leaders, who are all credible and prominent figures. In addition to church leaders he uses the testimony of a famous football coach to prove his point. All the different resources that President Uchtdorf uses in his speech add to its believability because his audience will more likely trust what he is saying.

Sufficient: This speech is the perfect length and has various examples and resources to back it's claim. When giving a speech about religious or personal issues many different angles of the argument must be addressed because the matter is so opinion based. This speech does the perfect job of doing so by using the right amount of evidence and public figures and resources to sway the audience.

Relevant: Any speech that is given to the LDS congregation is relevant to their current needs because modern day prophets are here to give their people revelation important to their specific needs of their day and age. The topic addressed in President Uchtdorf's speech is a problem that many people this day face and is therefore a relevant issue.

5.) President Uchtdorf does a very good job of convincing his audience that they need to focus on what is most important in their life because he uses many different techniques of addressing the issue and considers both sides of the argument and addresses each side in his speech.

Painting: Washington Crossing the Delaware


1.) This painting increases America’s desire to sustain freedom.

2.) The specific audience of this painting are all American’s, but also in a broader sense it is for all those who have a great desire for freedom.

3.) The goal of this painting is to commemorate the hope and perseverance George Washington and soldiers had during the revolutionary war. 

4.) Ethos: The highlight of this picture is general George Washington. During the time of this picture he was the general of the entire continental army. After the War, when this picture was painted, he was the President of the United States. Today his name is associated with banks, colleges, and various credible institutions. The mere fact that George Washington is in this picture convinces the viewer of its importance and purpose.  George Washington is the Father of our Nation, and he represents strength and freedom in the United States

Pathos: The contrast in lighting of this picture represents hope in the face of adversity. During the time of this Painting the continental army was nearing defeat. This surprise attack on the Hessians, hired assassins, would give General George Washington and his army hope that they could turn the battle around. The emotion on the face of Washington also shows the strength and courage that the continental army had. They were the underdogs in this battle, but they still persevered in the fight for their freedom.

Relevant: This painting was painted right before the start of the civil war. Although it was painted to commemorate the events of the Revolutionary War, it was a great reminder to those soldiers during the Civil war to remember the courage and strength these soldiers had to fight for their freedom.

Sufficient: This picture only shows a few of the boats that were crossing the Delaware, but the few soldiers in this boat perfectly fulfill the purpose of this painting. The emotion on their faces, the strength of George Washington, and the aura of hope in the lighting of the photo represent the fortitude these had for their fight for freedom.

5.) This painting achieves it’s goal to strike hope and courage in the American population to fight for their freedom by reminding them of their forefathers who gave their life to earn freedom for our country. It uses the respect people have for the George Washington, and the artistic techniques in the painting to convince the American people of the strength and courage the revolutionist had in their fight for freedom

Paper A

1. The HCG Diet does not have lasting results.

2. The audience are obese Americans who are interested in the HCG diet as a method to lose weight.

3. The goal of this paper is to convince the audience that the HCG diet is not practical because in the long run it does not keep weight off.

4. Logos: This paper uses facts and statistics to support its claim that the HCG diet does not keep weight off. One example are the percentages of how many people gained weight back after participating in the HCG diet. Presenting scientific evidence as support appeals to the logical side of an argument.

Ethos: Readers of this paper would find it very easy to trust the evidence presented because it is provided by doctors. Doctors and scientists have high credibility. Using their testimonies as support in the paper strengthens the argument, and gains the trust of the audience.

Sufficient: This paper has too many reasons to support the topic. In order to make the paper more efficient and persuasive, rather then informative, only one reason should be focused on in the claim.  Providing two many reasons and too much information can make the paper look unorganized. If the claim was limited to one reason then the paper would be easier for the audience to understand.

Accurate: The information provided as support in the paper is accurate because all of the sources are credible, but some of the information contradicts itself. One sentence claims that the Doctor who created the HCG diet does not state how many years he follows up with patient relapse, while another sentence in the same paragraph does. This makes the paper look like the information it is using is faulty. In order to fix this problem the accuracy of the evidence used needs to be checked.

5. Overall this paper has good reasons and evidence as to why the HCG diet does not keep off weight, but could be organized in a different manner to better achieve its goal. Right now the paper might grasp the attention of its audience but not convince them to stay clear of the HCG diet. To improve this paper one claim, opposed to two, needs to be developed.

Encounter

1.) Buying Bare Minerals makeup will decrease the shininess of your skin

2.) My friend Tiffany was the audience of my argument. She was looking for a new makeup product while we were shopping and I wanted to convince her that bare minerals would be the best option for her skin type, and would fit what she was looking for. She has relatively shiny skin and wears too much make-up to cover it up, so she was looking for a product that would make her look more natural.

3.) The first goal of my argument was to explain how the product works, and how it would be the best fit for her skin type. My second goal was to actually get her to buy Bare Minerals.

4.) Logos: The first approach that I took on the argument was to explain the science of the make-up. Bare Minerals uses only natural ingredients that are not oil based and are non comedogenic.  This would be perfect for her skin because she needs foundation that is not oily and does not clog her pores. The science behind how the product is made is logical evidence that supports the product.

Pathos: The second stance that I took on the argument is to tell her the celebrities that use bare minerals, and how they have perfect skin from using the product. Particularly one of her favorite actresses, Natalie Portman, uses bare minerals. This was a strong part of my argument because she thinks Natalie Portman is beautiful and admires her flawless skin. This gives the product more credibility in Tiffany's eyes because one of her favorite actresses uses the product.

Sufficient: I think that I provided enough evidence and explanation for why my friend should buy Bare Minerals. Given the circumstance, where we were shopping at the mall, If I had pressed the matter any further it would have ruined my argument and made my conversation with her seem unnatural, since we were on a normal shopping trip.

Relevant: The information and reasoning that I provided to Tiffany to convince her to buy Bare Minerals directly related to what she was looking for in a make-up product. I gave her logical reasons for how the product would decrease the shine on her face, and make her skin look flawless and more natural like one of her favorite actresses. I didn't bring up any reasons to support my claim that she wouldn't care about.

5.) I was very persuasive in convincing my friend to buy the make-up because she not only agreed and liked the reasons that I presented her with, but also bought the product and uses it daily.

1.) Treating the one you love with more compassion and devotion will make them feel special and as if they are the only person in the world for you.

2.) The audience of this music video are people who listen to Rihanna's music, especially adolescents.

3.) There are two goals of this music video. The first is to promote Rihanna as an artist, and get people to fall in love with and buy her music. The second is to visually portray how Rihanna interprets her lyrics and communicate that with her listeners.

4.) Pathos: Pathos is definitely present in all music video's because there is always someone with influence and credibility in music videos. In this case Rihanna plays on her influence over her audience by looking feminine and strong in her music video. The way she portrays herself in thi video proves her creativity and credibility as an artist.

Ethos: This emotion caught my heart at the beginning of the music video because of the location of her set and her apparel.She is in a vast open area all by herself, singing at the top of her lungs. This portrays her true emotions coming from this song that she wants to be treated like she was the only person that matters since she is all alone in the middle of nowhere. Her outfits were very stunning and beautiful. This portrays the desire she has to feel beautiful. When the person she loves makes her feel loved then she would just as vibrant on the inside as her clothing.

Sufficient: There were plenty of scene and outfit changes in this music video that matched perfectly with the lyrics. Even though Rihanna was the only person in this music video, it was perfect because of the song's meaning that she wanted to feel like the ony girl in the world.

Relevant: This music video is relevant with what today's audience is dealing with and wants to hear. There are plenty of girls who can relate to Rihanna's song because they want to be further loved bt their companion. Since they are dealing wtih the smae issue that Rihanna is singing about then they are more prone to listen.

5.) This music video is very successful in portraying the lyrics and Rihanna as an artist. She mainly uses creativity and pulls at emotions to win the audience over. You can see how happy Rihanna is after her man decides to treat her with more love and respect towards the end of the video.

"Weight Loss and Quality of Life Among Obese People"

1.) Loosing weight will increase your quality of life

2.) The audience for this article are those who suffer from obesity and are interested in the effects that loosing weight will have on their life.

3.) The goal of this article is to inform the audience about the effects that obesity has on your health and social relationships. After the author presents information on loosing weight and the effects it has on their health she tries to convince her readers that loosing weight would increase your health and positive social relationships.

4.) Logos: This article uses scientific evidence and results from scientific studies to support its claim. The style of writing in this article also appeals to the logos side of rhetoric because of the organization of the paper and then tone of the author.

Pathos: Pathos is used in this article because of the credibility that scientific studies attribute to the author's claim. Since the information that in the article is backed up by research the author has a more credible argument.

Sufficient: This article consists of 25 pages filled with credible information and research. The author has provided more than enough evidence to support her claim and inform her audience of weight loss and its effect on obesity. I almost think that she has provided too much information, and that the average reader might be hesitant to read the article because of its long length.

Relevant: This article touches on a problem that many people face today and will continue to present a problem until a sure solution has been found. I know that this article has helped me to understand the effects weight loss has on health and social benefits, and it directly applies to the persuasive paper I am writing about how banning trans fat helps the public to loose weight and increase their social relationships.

5.) This article is successful in reaching its goal of informing the public of weight loss and increased health and social status and convincing obese individuals to change their lifestyle. The article could use more ethos to really catch the attention of the audience, but since the article takes a more scientific stance bringing emotions into the argument could be difficult.

Eclipse Film Trailer

1.) Watching the movie eclipse will increase your level of entertainment for the day.

2.) The audience of this film trailer are the Twilight series fans, those who have read all of the books which this movie is based upon.

3.) The goal of this article is to catch the attention of its audience, pump them up about the movie Eclipse, and ultimately get them to go to the theaters and watch the movie.

4.)
Ethos: Since this is a movie actors are of course going to be a source of credibility for the film trailer. The choice of actors can have a big impact on whether or not a film is successful and the directors of Eclipse took this into consideration when choosing their  cast. The potential audience of this movie would expect Robert Pattinson and Taylor Laughtner to be in the film because they were in the past two. The Trailer also shows all the main characters, which to the film's advantage are all the same cast. When a series keeps the same cast it builds credibility for the movie.

Pathos: This film trailer overall is very dramatic and plays on the emotions of the audience as one of its main tactics. The opening scene begins with one of the main controversies in the book, the relationship between Bella and Edward and the relationship between Bella and Jake. Opening the trailer with a scene where all three are present and fighting about the issue plays at the emotions of all the readers who love the Twilight Books and Movies for its twisted romance. The music of the movie also has an emotional effect on the viewer. The background music is very action oriented, with a tone of danger. It starts off at a medium tone and then builds until the very end scene of the trailer.

Sufficient: This film trailer is mostly sufficient to those who have a background knowledge of the Twilight books and movies. It provides the perfect amount of footage and scenes to catch the attention of Twilight fans and hook them into seeing the movie. If more information was provided then it could have given away too many scenes of the movie. The trailer may not seem sufficient enough for those who have no previous knowledge of the Twilight series. If the specific audience were those completely new to the Twilight books then more information about the past movies might need to be provided.

Relevant: The Eclipse trailer is relevant because it is advertising a movie that most Twilight fans are dying to see. If the trailer was advertising for a film that no one really cared about then more information and a different approach would need to be made in order to convince people to see the movie.

5.) I think this film trailer is successful in accomplishing its goal because it plays on the emotions of the viewer, catching their attention and leaving them wanting more, and because it uses the same cast and appeals to the trailer's specific audience. It is the perfect film trailer for a continuing series.

3. The goal of this article is to prove that the HCG diet is ineffective in curing obesity and keeping the weight off. The article agrees that initially the HCG increases weight loss, but almost every patient relapses and regains the the weight they lost back.

Ethos: This article proves credible because it uses scientific research and the testimonies of doctors to prove its claim. When an authoritative figure is used to support a claim, such as a doctor, the readers of the article are more likely to believe the evidence presented. 

Logos: Most of the article is built upon a scientific study, which appeals to the logical side of an argument. It is hard to argue with a claim when sound evidence and statistical data is used.

Sufficient: This article is sufficient in two ways. The first being that it provides enough information to efficiently support its claim that the HCG diet does not work. It is also sufficient in the fact that it provides the research data in the form of a graph and written out. This is very helpful to the reader because it give them the opportunity to visualize the evidence as well as read it.

Relevant: This article is relevant because it directly informs the reader of its purpose and provides applicable information to back up their claim. This article is also relevant because it is a scholarly study that can be trusted.

5. This article is effective in persuading its audience that the HCG diet does not permanently cure obesity and keep weight off because it provides information and testimonies that cannot be argued with. It is also effective because it provides the perfect amount and right type of credible information.

RA Week Two: Commercial

1. A Snickers candy bar is the perfect snack because it can satisfy your hunger and allow you to play at the top of your game.

2. The general audience of this commercial are people who do not perform at their best ability when they are fatigued and need a quick snack. This commercial may also be targeting a more specific audience of young adults who could relate better to and appreciate the humor of the commercial. Young adults are shown playing football in this commercial, and it is typical of that age group to constantly be on the go and not have time to grab anything but a quick snack.

3. The goal of this commercial is to convince the audience to buy snickers when they need a quick pick me up or snack to appease their appetite.

4. Ethos: Betty White, a famous actress, is used to endorse the product in this commercial. Often when an actress is endorsing a product, that product becomes more credible because people respect their stamp of approval.

Pathos: This commercial plays on the emotion of humor. A group of men are playing football and one of the players has lost his energy. This commercial gives us the idea that his physical performance is compared to an elderly women because one of the players is an old lady. After being tackled she acts like one of the guys, complaining about her performance. As soon as she eats a snickers she turns back into a man and continues to play. The commercial perfectly pinpoints its specific audience of young adults who would think this comparison of an old women to a fatigued man and his poor performance during a football game is hilarious.

Sufficient: This commercial has sufficient evidence because it proves its claim that a snickers bar satisfies hunger. I believe that this is enough evidence for this specific commercial because a candy bar commercial just needs to be short and to the point. If specific facts or further evidence were listed of why the candy bar satisfies hunger the commercial would not be as effective because more information and proof would take away from the humor of the commercial.

Relevant: People that need a quick snack to boost their energy, and specifically those that are young adults can relate to this commercial. The commercial provides a perfect example of a situation where eating a snickers bar can improve someone's performance, therefore making the product relevant to its audience.

5. This commercial is effective because it pinpoints a specific audience, and then uses many persuasive techniques to convince them to buy a snickers bar. The commercial uses a humorous spin and credible actress to grab the attention of its viewers and then convinces them to buy their product when it proves effective at the end. The commercial is also successful because it is the perfect length, has enough evidence, and the product advertised is relevant to the targeted audience.

RA Week One: Still Advertisement


1.) The Sleek and Shine Shampoo from Garnier Fructis uses lite nutritive fruit micro-oils to leave your hair four times smoother and five times stronger, while preventing flyaways.

2.) The audience are women with frizzy and damaged hair.

3.) The goal is to convince women to buy Garnier's Sleek and Shine Shampoo.

4.) Ethos: An appeal to authority is made by the layout of the box titled "Fortifying Facts." The design of this part of the add resembles that of Nutrition Labels of food products, a requirement by law on most food items in the U.S. The structure alone of the credits the facts listed with a sense of importance.

    Pathos: This add plays on the emotions of women with frizzy or damaged hair because of the model's hair and beauty. The blond girl has radiant and smooth hair. The picture brings up the insecurities that women have with their physical appearance, particularly their hair, and draws them towards using this product in order to become more beautiful.

   Logos: This ad uses facts to logically convince women that the products new formula of lite nutritive micro-beads enhances the smoothness and strength of their hair.

5.) I believe that this ad is effective in accomplishing its goal to convince women to buy the product because it hits all three ares of how the product is effective by using ethos, pathos, and logos to convince the audience. The layout is credible, the girl in the picture has beautiful hair, and the facts listed support their product's claim to make your hair smoother and stronger.
